Okay, I started on this post 3 days ago (it's now the 6th). Sorry I'm slow, but I've just been busy. (Just keep in mind that it was really late when I started on this.) Anyway...
I think I've just figured out why it is that kids will often like things that grownups don't. It's because kids don't "know better"--basically they don't fear the things that adults sometimes fear because of the knowledge adults have about certain dangers. Specifically what brought this whole thought on was I was reading this blog about a horseback-riding trip and thinking how much I could enjoy that kind of trip if it weren't for things out in nature that I don't like, such as snakes and bugs and such. I don't like creepy crawlies.
Here's an example. I was walking through the forest in Kolari, Finland, (location is shown on this map of Finland; it's inside the Arctic Circle)
with my parents, my sister, and her husband and kids several years ago (gee, it's been more than 10 now!), and there were these weird, funky-looking bugs I'd never seen before. I commented to my brother-in-law, "You know, I could really love nature if it weren't for all these darn bugs!" He replied, "You know, I could really love nature if it weren't so darn natural!" We laughed, and I realized he had a good point. Those things are part of nature. I guess when it really comes right down to it, there are things I love about nature, but overall it's just too darn natural! :-)
And now for what you've all been waiting for...
I don't know whether any of you ever watched "Saturday Night Live." I don't watch it anymore because they've gotten way too crude, but I used to watch it occasionally (oh, about half my life ago). One of my favorite parts was "Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey." So here are a few for you:
"The face of a child can say it all... especially the mouth part of the face."
"I hope if dogs ever take over the world, and they choose a king, they don't just go by size because I bet there are some chihuahuas with some pretty good ideas."
“It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.”
“I believe in making the world safe for our children, but not our children's children, because I don't think children should be having sex.”
“If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason.”
"One thing kids like is to be tricked. For instance, I was going to take my little nephew to DisneyLand, but instead I drove him to an old burned-out warehouse. 'Oh, no,' I said, 'DisneyLand burned down.' He cried and cried, but I think that deep down he thought it was a pretty good joke. I started to drive over to the real DisneyLand, but it was getting pretty late."
I hope you enjoyed those. I just couldn't seem to stop. (Once I passed 3, I had to go on to 6, you know!) :-)

That is really funny. AND TRUE. I try to make the things I dislike or fear, "interesting" for my children. Like bugs and snakes. While teaching them that we don't touch them and that they can hurt us, then we go look it up on the internet and find out where it likes to sleep and what it eats. Survivorman is a big fan with my kids. If only I could get them to stop drinking mudd!
You are missing out on sooooo much in the bug world. You are not however, not missing out on much in the snake world!
Cool that you have been to Finland.
Loved Jack Handey. Made me laugh for the morning!
Jack got me too. Nice job on this one.
The only jungle many of us see is the shag in our carpet--the only nature, a can of lima beans.
I didn't know you were a Jack Handy fan. Not that I ever would have known who he was if it weren't for Cory and my sister-in-law, Angie. Pretty funny. Thanks for the laugh.
